You would think that with some time off from teaching that I would get on the computer a little more often. Unfortunately, I've had so much catching up to do that I haven't given myself the luxury of sitting down at the computer. This is a reward for me, so you can tell how behind I am based on how frequently I get new posts on here. Also, it takes a couple of hours just to catch up on my family members' blogs, so by the time I'm done, I'm tired or time is up. So with that fantastic introduction, on to the Christmas summary letter!
We had a GREAT Christmas. As much as we missed being with Dave's family in Tucson this year, we really enjoyed being HOME for Christmas. It really is nice and helps in establishing family traditions.
The days leading up to Christmas were a whirlwind. School was crazy and was filled with rehearsals for our Christmas concert. We have a traditional concert at the University Mall every year that ends with the kids (most of them) going home for the holiday break with their families. (About 5 or so end up coming back with the teachers on the bus.) I have been the lucky one to get to teach, choreograph and direct the program for the K - 2nd graders.) I think it was more out of desperation than inspiration! Anyway, it's always fun, but a stress to get it all put together. We end up performing it for two nursing homes and then finish with the performance for our parents. Each year I panic as they sort of "get through" the first 2 performances (granted most of our audience members our hard of hearing, can't really see us, or are asleep, but I still wish the kids would do better!) But they always shine for their parents. Even if they make mistakes here and there, their parents think they are cute and that' s all that matters. (That's the pep talk I've resorted to giving myself and have trained my fellow co-workers to give me.) Anyway, it did go well and was a nice opener for Christmas break.
The next two days (Fri. and Sat.) were filled with RUNNING and HURRYING to get everything (or at least a lot of things) done. I had a lot done, but there are always so many last minute or forgotten things, that I was not lacking for things to do.
We were able to go to the Tanner Family Christmas Party in Payson on Saturday afternoon. Mom (and Dad, maybe) had put a lot of work in to get it all organized and pulled together and it turned out well. It was fun to see everyone again and see the newest babies. The family sure has grown. It was nice to spend some time with my grandparents too!
Luckily, Sunday was thrown in there, after two hectic days, to make me stop and remember the true reason for Christmas. It was nice to have a day to reflect on our Savior's birth and somewhat slow things down for a bit.
I was back at the stores Monday (Christmas Eve) and believe it or not, I was not the only one there. In fact I had to hitchhike to the door at WalMart from my parking spot. (Okay, maybe not, but I'm sure I worked off maybe one Christmas cookie on that journey!) But, I did get everything I needed and went home to get ready to go to Lynn's.
We spent Christmas Eve with my mom and dad and the 4 girls and families. Lynn had her home all decked out and we had a nice dinner. We enjoyed spending some time together and then headed back in the snowstorm outside to finish the evening at our own homes. We watched the Living Scriptures " A King is Born" and the Luke 2 video. We then hung our stockings, got the cookies, milk and carrots ready, and finally got the kids to bed. They did get to open their Christmas pajama gifts from Grandma Gibson first and were thrilled to find matching PJs for their "Build-a-Bears" and one for Tanna's new doll. I was amazed that Scottie settled for the PJ gift that night. He had been begging for days to get to choose the gift he got to open on Christmas Eve. Miraculously, he never mentioned it again after that!!
Christmas morning the boys were in at about 6:45 am to get us up. Dave was already up and showering and I was the one that had to be dragged out of bed. What a role reversal this year. I guess I had one too many late night's collaborating with Santa on this year's Christmas gifts. So, we had to wait for Dad to get out of the shower and get dressed. This was torturous for Scottie and Mason. My stories of sitting on the living room couch waiting for Mark to get back from his paper route didn't even seem to phase them. But finally, we headed downstairs -- one of us smelling much better than the rest of us!!
The boys had a great time opening their gifts. We opened them Gibson-style with Dad passing out the gifts and opening them one at time. Scottie may be the oldest, but he still has the hardest time waiting for his next turn! He was thrilled to get a DS handheld game system and Alvin and the Chipmunks game. He was so sure Santa would come through even though his Mom and Dad had said no. Thank goodness for Santa and his soft heart!! He was so happy!
Mason was a little disappointed not to get his request from Santa. He had repeatedly asked for a Princess Presto (from the PBS show Super Why) magic wand that could turn him into anything! Apparently Santa had no idea what to do with this request, so he got him a cash register instead. Hey, that's close enough, don't you think?! Besides, you don't create future CostCo employees (we love CostCo!) with a magic wand!! Oh, Santa also threw in 3 new games for our V-Smile system. (The game system teachers get for their kids -- education in disguise!!) He seemed happy enough, although slightly disappointed in Santa's omission!
Tanna got a "Learn Through Music" system. It's a console that you put cartridges in and can listen to songs, while interacting by pushing on the screen. (Wow, it's amazing that they haven't called me to do promotional campaigns for them!!!) Anyway, Google it if you have any desire to see what I'm trying to describe. Anyway, it is supposed to keep her entertained for at least 5 minutes. That was Santa's gift to us!!!
All in all the kids were very blessed by Santa, Mom and Dad, grandparents and other family members! Thanks to all who made that possible. We were even able to take a break half way through and let the kids play with their gifts, before coming back for more. Even then, we ended up finishing that afternoon when G & G Gibson came over. They had a great day and made it a memorable day for all of us!
Since then, I have enjoyed the relief of having gotten it all done! I have caught up (for a minute) on laundry, and am trying to get the house put back together. It's amazing all that I have put off for "when I have more time." I won't be caught up by Thursday, when we go back to school, but I will feel a lot better about things!
We now look forward to spending a bit of our New Year's Evening with my family at Kim's. We will head home early to allow my parents to get to bed in preparation for their trip home Tuesday. :-( We sure have enjoyed having them here. They are always so busy, but they were able to take the time to come to church with our family today and have lunch with us. It's nice to get the one-on-one time with them. We wish we could do it more often!!
Well, I'll close and wish you all a very Happy New Year!!
Love,
Jill and family

Christmas 2007 Letter
Here's a copy of our Christmas letter this year. Unfortunately I can't get the pictures and formatting to be the same as the actual letter. But at least you'll get the idea!
December 2007
Dear Family and Friends,
We waited to get the perfect Christmas picture this year, but after one real attempt , one last minute attempt, (and then lack of time and desire to go through all that picture mayhem) we will include the pictures that we have decided will NOT get hung on the wall this year! We still have high hopes of getting another chance, but by the time the next Christmas letter goes out, we’ll still have to get another one… ho hum…
2007 has been a great, but busy, year for our family. We have enjoyed being a family of five and have decided that it is more work than we ever realized. We have decided that because so many families make having more than one child look easy, that our mission will be to let the truth be known! We will be the poster family for making it look as complicated as it can be. Therefore, we have risen to the occasion and have taken these roles and opportunities quite seriously…
Church – We are the family that races in as the bishop is getting up to begin the meeting (oh, this is on a good day!) . Why fool people into thinking that it is easy to get five of us ready for church, no matter how early we get up?!! We also relish in the opportunity to display how difficult it is to keep our three very active (that might be putting it mildly for a couple of them!) children reverent during the meeting. Whispering—What’s that?! It seems to be an impossibility for our 3 year old. And so, we keep showing up, week after week, to help any (who had any hope of getting anything out of the meeting) understand that they need to try harder to find a seat on the opposite side of the room the next week.
School- I am the teacher that races through the door in the morning , arms raised above my head, as if I’ve just completed a marathon run, and says, “I made it! Woohoo, I actually made it!” Once again, why make this working mom thing actually look easy! The world needs to know the chaos of early morning life in a house with children!
Shopping- I enjoy watching those children who rise to the occasion in any type of shopping situation and let their unhappiness be known! My children have been doing this for years and it’s time for children to step up and show all those childless families how fun shopping truly can be!! Think of all the money we have saved by cutting our grocery trips short! Once again, a grand opportunity to make this family thing look tricky!
Appearances – There are times that I forget our family’s mission – to let the truth be known. I will have once again tried to get everyone dressed “cute” with matching shoes (on the right feet!), hair combed, and clean faces. My children inwardly ask, “Who am I trying to fool?!” and step up to their obligations. We will arrive at our destination before I notice that shoes have made it on the wrong feet, hair looks like it has never been touched and the most recent meal or snack has somehow made it all over faces or clothes! Wow, they are good!
The Neat and Tidy House – This is another area that my children take their roles as poster children to heart. No matter how hard Dave and I attempt to keep things picked up and clean, we realize that we are outnumbered and much slower! We forget that our many responsibilities outside of the home limit our ability to keep up! Tanna (our 1 ½ year old “princess”) is the major contributor to the home destruction project. Somehow she was born with the ability to destroy a room in 30 seconds flat, before anyone else has time to realize what is happening. Therefore, we realize that our efforts to make this perfect family thing look much more realistic are being supported on High. We are being sent the very children that can make it all happen or not happen!!
And so, at this holiday time, we want you to take a moment to be grateful that you were not selected as the poster family for mayhem and give everyone an extra hug. Enjoy the quiet prelude music in your church meetings as you look on to the reverent family members at your side. Enjoy that extra time to stop for a drink on your way to work early! Take a minute to read those magazine covers at the check-out stand as you enjoy the quiet, peaceful end of another productive shopping trip. Take a moment to take a picture of your Norman Rockwell looking family as you go on your daily excursions. Then take the phone off the hook and relax from those darn Better Homes and Gardens photographers who want yet another picture of your humble abode! When it all gets too mundane, give us a call or drop us a note and come and visit. We’ll make you appreciate it all again!
We wish you a peaceful holiday season! We’ll be here catching our breath!!
Love,
The Shanks Family (http://www.djshanksfamily.blogspot.com/)
P.S. Oops, I think I forgot the most important part of all…here’s Dave’s contribution. You can see who’s going to get more presents from Santa this year!
Jill and I love each other very much. We have strong testimonies of the gospel and are grateful for this greatest of all blessings. We are active in the church. All of our children are healthy and doing well. We have a great home in Lehi, live in a great community, in one of the greatest nations imaginable, and we have a living prophet. What more could a person ask for?
We do hope you remember to keep it all in perspective! Enjoy all those things that keep life interesting! And most of all remember the “reason for the season!”
(Family photo goes here, but the computer and I are not getting along, so look for that picture at the top of our blog! It's huge, isn't it!! But, I don't know how to adjust sizes, so just scroll down the page quickly! Below is the caption for this family photo!)

Yes, We're Still Alive!
Dave gave me an hour to myself tonight! Yeahoo! And I determined that tonight I would let everything else go and get on the computer. I've really missed it! Unfortunately, I'm getting tired and I've spent much of my time catching up on other family members' blogs. So, I am reporting in - briefly - to let all concerned know that we still are alive and kicking in the Shanks' household.
December has just flown by and it's been so busy! I still have SO much to do, and keep thinking that I'll get it done on Christmas break. (That will give me 3 whole days before Christmas!!! Of course, I'll get it all done! :-) ) Anyway, it will all get done, I just have to be organized and give up my computer time!!
We are getting ready for our Christmas concert at school. The time has just flown by and I really hope to be ready by the 2oth! It always turns out fine and I have to remember that all they have to be is cute -- not professionals!! I do stress about it more than I should, but like I said, it always turns out great and no one even remembers what they sang by the next week or day, for that matter! Ah well!!
In the meantime, we've been busy with birthday parties, ward parties, school parties, cub scouts, etc. Trying to find Santa Claus has been another tricky job for us. We went to meet him in town on Saturday and apparently he got tired and left early. So, we missed him by 15 minutes. We decided to hit him at his next post, the mall, but again we missed him by 15 minutes. Now, we are not slow learners so we took this as a sign that we have some repenting to do to get ourselves off "The Naughty List." Hopefully, we can do better this week, earn some "brownie points" and gain spots back on "The Nice List." Then Santa won't have to try so hard to avoid us!
So, bear (thanks to M&K for the spelling lesson!) :-) with us and we'll get back to update you on our family life as life slows down a bit. Just know that for now all is well and we're working on getting back on Santa's good side!

Yeah - That About Sums it Up!!
Kim came over tonight and was noticing the magnet boards I have on the fridge that say "Look What Scottie Made!" I have one for each of the kids. Just then Tanna, who was being ignored I suppose, threw her dinner bowl on the floor making a big mess. Scottie pulled off the magnet that said "Look what Tanna made!" and said "There we go! We should just put this on the floor!" Kim and I got a good laugh out of that! She does specialize in making MESSES!
Wow -- I Did It!!!!!
You know it only took two night's worth of work, but I finally figured out how to do a slideshow!! Thanks to Chris who listed slide.com in their blog. I had tried Shutterfly and spent way too long trying to get pictures and it ended up not working out at all!!! Anyway, here's a few of our pictures from our trip and then our visit with Chris and family when we returned! Prepare to receive more of these -- it was actually fun! :-)
By the way, if anyone knows how to take the labels off of the pictures, please let me know!!
Good night to all!

We're Back!
Well, after a bit of a break...we're back!
We are back from our trip to Arizona visiting Dave's family. We had a nice long trip and enjoyed visiting with the family there. Unfortunately, we arrived Friday morning and started with Mason getting the stomach flu that evening. Then one by one, everyone in the household got it, including Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Dan. I thought I was off the hook this time, but I ended up getting it last on Thanksgiving night. So, our trip was not quiet as action packed as we would have liked, but we still enjoyed our time there.
One of the first events was a wedding. Dave's brother (Bobby) got married on Friday evening and had a reception on Saturday night. I missed Friday's events due to sickness and tending the kids and cousins, but we were able to celebrate on Saturday. It was a nice dinner and we were glad to be a part of the celebration.
Early Saturday morning was the start of Dave's big event -- the Tour de Tucson. The reason we had left early (missing 4 days of school in all), was to get Dave there in time for his 109 mile ride (cycling). Dave ended up making it the whole way in under 9 hours. He did great and was excited to qualify for a silver medal. (Meaning you finished the ride in under 9 hrs.) He said it was a great experience and he would like to make it a tradition. His sister, Maria, got a road bike while we were there, so she may join him on the ride next year. He's excited about that--it's more fun to ride with someone you know! Anyway, it was a big success and I got to learn how to drive around downtown Tucson and see a lot of the area. (Dave's dad, Dan, the kids, and I went to meet Dave at one of his rest stops. That was an adventure--they aren't very car friendly! :-) )
The rest of the time we just nursed whoever was sick that particular day and walked or drove to local parks to get the kids out in the gorgeous weather!
Thanksgiving was a great day with no sicknesses (Gene was finally on the mend and I wouldn't get sick until the middle of the night!). All of the family gathered at 2:30 pm for an outside Thanksgiving dinner. What a treat! It was hot enough that the butter even melted! It was a perfect day and so nice to enjoy the eating and visiting outside. We played some games (UNO) that night and just enjoyed catching up on everyone's news.
Friday we ended up staying so that Dave could go on a ride with Maria for her first outing on her new bike. The boys also got to go to the zoo with Grandma, Aunt Julie, Aunt Dina, and cousins Bailey and Haiden. (I'm pretty sure I spelled her name wrong! Sorry!!) They had a great time and let me stay home to get feeling better. Apparently Mason was very interested in the map. He would make sure he knew where they were on the map at each stop and look to see where they would be headed next! (He definitely didn't get that from me -- Dave can tell you I'm not the best at reading maps!!)
Saturday morning we got up and out the door by 9:45 am -- a record for this family. We're not very good at leaving early!! I'll tell you it's a lot harder driving during the daytime. I do enjoy having the kids sleep through most of the trip, although it's tougher on the driver (Dave). Anyway we survived the 14 or so hour drive. Mason and Scottie were great and watched movie after movie. Tanna, on the other hand, was a handful. She did not enjoy sitting that long in her carseat. She and I couldn't wait to get home by the evening. We learned on the way down that Benedril (sp?) does NOT make her drousy -- aughh!! Anyway, we were happy to get home. (Well, the boys weren't -- they constantly say how much they miss Grandma and Grandpa and "Danny". Too bad they live so far away!!)
Sunday we woke up late and had a message on my phone that Chris and Krissy, etc. would be in town for another couple of hours. We hurried and got back in the car and headed down to Lynn's. We enjoyed getting at least a little time with them. They are a great family with 5 great kids! I wish we could be closer to them too, but it does make us appreciate them all the more!!
Well, that was a lot more than I really had time to write. I do have a lot to do around the house to catch-up, but at least that gives a good synopsis! School is going well and the kids were glad to see Scottie and me again. The kids are pretty wild and probably won't get much better until January. I can't believe Christmas is right around the corner!! We have a lot to do to get ready for our Christmas concert. Wish me/us luck!!
Well, I'm off to bed. (Heck, that laundry didn't need folding anyway!!!)
Have a great end of November!

Someone Up There Has Quite a Sense of Humor!
Well, after two boys I was thrilled to find out we would be having a baby girl. Finally, I could put away the blue, replace the superheroes with dolls, and enjoy a sweet, little princess. That's what I prepared myself for...
I have replaced most of the blue with pink. Dolls and cradles have entered our home, and yes, we did receive our little princess. But, I have also found that someone has a sense of humor.
I had no idea...
...that my little princess could have more energy than my little Scottie (or maybe I'm just older and have forgotten!)
...that blue covered up so many stains. Pink just doesn't seem to hide them as well!
...that I would need to use the seat belt in the shopping cart and the high chair at home. I never bothered with them before!
...that the toilet was so fun to play in and try to sneak drinks out of! (The bathroom door must be closed at all times now!)
...that the house could be turned upside down so quickly by one little munchkin!
...that girls could roll their eyes and give dirty looks at just a little over 1 year of age!
...that even with all of this, she could melt your heart with one twist of the head and one batting of the eyelashes!
Yes, we love her to pieces and wouldn't trade her for the world. She may be a handful, but she can make us laugh through any tears and has mastered the art of wrapping us all around her little finger! What would we do without our little, Tanna?!

Halloween 2007
We had another fun Halloween! It started last week with our party at the Lehi Legacy Center with all the sisters and families. Then it was off to Kim's for our 2nd annual (hint, hint) Halloween Party. Kim always does a great job and even gave us all assignments to get us into the spirit of the event. We were in charge of the "Witches Brew" which consisted of Sprite, frozen ice "witch hands" and dry ice. Kim's quite a slave driver, isn't she?! :-) Anyway, it was fun and the kids enjoyed it. We played some Halloween games and took home some very wound-up kids at the end of the evening.
Monday night we carved our pumpkins. Actually, I would have to say Scottie and Mason chose their pumpkins, designed their faces and left me to clean and do most of the rest! Scottie did actually carve a lot of his this year, thanks to the safety carving tools. He did a great job. Mason just requested his to look exactly like Scottie's -- no surprise (he is definitely a Scottie wannabe!). So, after a messy job and many thoughts of "Why am I doing this?", the tradition of pumpkin carving was completed. The boys didn't really seem to be too interested after the job was done and I really did wonder if they would have noticed if I would have opted to skip it this year. It's an idea for next year! :-) Anyway, I do need to count my blessings that Tanna had no interest in a pumpkin carving this year--this could be my last year to get away with carving 2 pumpkins!
Wednesday was a busy day. I dressed up in the Dorothy costume that Mom made for me. All the teachers dressed as a character from the "Wizard of Oz" this year. I was elected to be Dorothy based on my hair color! Luckily, Carolyn, our next door neighbor, saved me and helped me do my hair. I'm not very good at braiding my own. Anyway, the whole costume turned out pretty good. My spray painted shoes started to lose their color by the end of the day, but otherwise it turned out pretty well!
The school kids were all dressed up and were as excited as ever. I had about 6 ninjas in my class. That was the costume of the year in my group. I even had one girl dress up as a ninja! We filled the day with a Halloween parade and a program put on for the school and parents. My class "performed" "5 Little Pumpkins Sitting On a Gate" and "Boo, Boo, Boo I'm a Ghost to Scare You!" It all turned out well and we ended the day with class parties.
I returned home to fix dinner (chili -- tradition!!) and get the kids ready for Trick or Treating. I had planned on going downtown for the trick or treating among the Lehi Businesses, but Scottie was more interested in playing with his friends, so I scrapped that plan. We didn't even end up going back to Cedar Fort for the Trunk or Treat there. Scottie wanted to stay in the neighborhood, so I really lucked out this year! We ended up going to all of the houses in our ward. I ended up driving with Tanna since it got dark and cold pretty fast. Our neighbor kids (the Toneys) stayed with Scottie and Mason and I followed in the car. They had a great time and Scottie ended up with 100 pieces of candy. (We counted and sorted it for his math assignment.) I'm sure that won't be enough when he's older, but it's PLENTY for now!! We got home to get ready for bed and finally collapse into bed!
All in all it was a fun day and I'm ready for a 365 day break until the next one! :-) I turned on the radio the day after Halloween and there was Christmas music playing. So let me be the first to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! (Who needs Thanksgiving anyway?!)

Whew!
Well, I did it! I survived Red Ribbon Week and Halloween week and it's quite possible that somebody learned something in those two weeks. Next week it's back to a "normal" schedule again. Hopefully, nothing too exciting will happen. Let's pray for boring! :-) Poor students--aren't I fun?!

I'm Tired!
To all those waiting with great anticipation for the next installment of the Shanks' exciting life, I have to put you off for another day or so! My explanation? Imagine Halloween with 23 first graders who cannot contain themselves. Then imagine going home to trick or treat with 3 adorable Shanks kids. Now take it to the next day to deal with 24 first graders on the day after Halloween (yes, I got a new student today -- boy #18 ). Now imagine that it's only Thursday and the week is not over yet. Yes, you get to go back and face all 24 of them on the day after the day after Halloween. Yes, as jealous as you all might be, I am the lucky one who gets to go back and try to teach something of educational value tomorrow. Wish me luck--for now I'm off to bed!! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words?
You know, they say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but I beg to differ. Today after school we had another family picture taken. Unfortunately it's been 2 years since the last one and we had Tanna since then. So, as I peeked at the preview they had on their computer, I had to laugh -- a picture doesn't even begin to tell the whole story. The picture showed a happy family of five. Everyone looked content and happy to be there. That is great--that's what we want it to say. But....
What the picture doesn't show is the hour or so leading up to that moment. It doesn't show me looking at the clock during an after school meeting wondering how I would get out on time. (I didn't and I ended up having to leave in the middle. Luckily I had asked permission that morning.) It doesn't show me picking Scottie up half way through his good friend Tyree's birthday party, because our appointment was the only one I could get and made way before the birthday plan. It doesn't show me calling Dave and reminding him gently that he and Mason and Tanna were supposed to be dressed already! It doesn't show me racing in the house to throw on a new outfit, fix my hair and make-up. It doesn't show Mason being dressed and ready to go - to my delight. And it doesn't show Dave trying to button up Tanna's dress, but realizing he would need back-up! It also doesn't show how quickly Scottie and Dave got ready and into the car with such willing attitudes (Thank you!!). It doesn't show how patient my family was with their stressed out Mom. It doesn't tell what a blessing this patience was to me this day. It also doesn't show how cooperative Scottie and Mason were and how quickly Tanna settled down after her pre-2 year old tantrum! Most of all it doesn't show how relieved I was to see that flash and know we had made it through another family picture.
So, years from now that picture may be passed down, but it will be without the knowledge of all the little events that led up to it. No one will know what a big deal this Mom had made of it and how well her family put up with her lack of patience!! What they will see is a happy family of five -- what more could I ask for?!!

Out of the Mouths of Babes...
Last night Mason was singing in bed to me before being officially tucked in for the night. He was bragging about a new song he knew and started singing "Yankee Doodle." The words were not all there, but the ending was what made the whole song for me...."Stuck a feather in his hat and called it 'Mac and Cheese!'"
Scottie and I laughed so hard! It'll never be the same for either of us again!

Only in Utah...
You know you're living in Utah when you teach in a school where you begin special teacher luncheons with a prayer. We talk about R.S. / Primary lessons during lunch and attend each other's blessings, baptisms, etc.
Well, it's not restricted to the teachers. A couple of days ago, I was talking to the class about what the word "thankful" meant. We got into things we are thankful for. Of course there were the old standbys - family, home, food, clothing, etc. But in the course of the conversation one child said he was greatful we could be baptized and wash away our sins. Another child asked what that was and the others commenced to explain about how you get baptized and get the Holy Ghost. Of course, this led into another conversation. One boy said that the Holy Ghost was what protected you when you were in danger. I just sat back and let the conversation happen and marveled at the unique situation I am in. Of course, I am unable to comment much in these topics so as to not mix church and state, but it's fun to be a bystander. They have no fear and I really admire their pure hearts. So, when people ask why I would want to live in Utah I respond, because we can talk about baptism, the Holy Ghost and Heavenly Father all in a school time Thanksgiving lesson. Isn't that what it's really all about anyway?

Red Ribbon Week
Ah, thank goodness it's Thursday! It's Red Ribbon Week at school and for some reason the kids have been a bit tougher this week. Red Ribbon Week is a week that we focus on the need to say no to drugs and alcohol. It's also a week I hear about all the relatives who do smoke and drink. Sometimes, it's more than I really need to know! Every year I have to have the conversation that these individuals are really good people who are just making some poor choices.
Today we had our red balloon release. The kids all signed a pledge to stay drug free and tied it to a balloon. We then let all the balloons go at the same time. It was a fun reminder of my grade school days. I remember that being such a fun day. Anyway, the kids have been excited about all of our activities this week. I figure they'll calm down by next Friday when they all crash from their sugar highs from Halloween.

The Silver Lining
You know, I think the Lord knows what He is doing. No, this is not my first realization of this, but tonight it was reconfirmed. We had just ended another difficult night of getting the boys to bed. I was done with kids, as I usually am at this point, and was grumbling a bit to myself about how bedtime is not my favorite time of the day. I went off to put clothes away when I quietly entered the boys' room. Scottie surprised me when he said, "Mom, I'm so sad I never got to meet your Grandma Gibson. I never even got to get to know her. I bet she's sad she never got to know me either." My heart was immediately melted and I told him I was sad that he never got to meet her either. But, I did explain that I'm sure they spent time together before he was born and that he just couldn't remember it. He replied, "I'm still sad I never got to know her here. I bet I would have liked her." We continued talking about other grandparents he never got to meet, as well as the little time I had to spend with my Great-grandparents. I finally left him to go back to sleep as he said, "Mom, I just have so many questions."
And so, the Lord knows how to keep us falling in love with these little ones. For all those tough moments, even just one silver lining seems to make it all worth it!

Two Days In a Row!
Wow, this is a record for me! Two days in a row on the computer! I actually looked forward to coming down and trying again. We'll see how long this keeps up.
I'm very impressed with how fast Mark got his blog up and running. Trust me, that peer pressure is very powerful!
Anyway, we just ended another hectic night. They all seem to go that way. I have the best of intentions for a great nighttime schedule, but something always happens to throw us off that well intended schedule. We did get a family dinner in -- we're really working on improving in that area-- Family Home Evening, and cookies delivered to the neighbors. Hey, the kids even got their nightly shower (a must when your kids are as active and messy as mine are!) -- even if it was only about 5 minutes-- at least they're clean. But, we missed homework time and reading time. Ah, who needs it?! Just kidding -- It's one of those guilt buttons that gets pushed when it doesn't get done. So, tomorrow we'll have to double up and therefore, another hectic night!
Bedtime routines? Kim's family sounds so happy and loving at night. Ours is a bit more chaotic! It usually ends up with Mom using her louder-than-June Cleaver voice. But, we do say prayers after all the preparatory stuff is done. Both boys always ask for the angels to watch over them. This helps them to know that the bad guys will be kept away for another night. They also sleep in the same bed -- the bottom bunk. Yes our top bunk is perfectly great, but they're too scared to sleep alone. As it is right now, Mason sleeps at the head of the bed with his feet pointing toward Scottie. Scottie is at the foot of the bed with his legs up by Mason. This is the newest sleeping arrangement. We've found that there is less tapping/hitting/pinching if they sleep in opposited directions. Everyone knows that sleeping in a bed together is still a great advancement for kids who were once in our bed, then on our floor, then on to the walk-in closet. We still have to keep the dimmer switch on low for their overhead light and have all the doors open. This way their mother will be at their beck and call when she bearly drifts off to that deep, hard-to-wake-up-and-know-what's-going-on sleep. But even with the chaos and slightly elevated voices from a tired mom, the evening still ends with our usual words: "Mom, did you get it?" "Got it!" "Did you get mine, Mom?" "Yes, Mason, did you get mine?" "Got it!" (Referring to our kisses we blew to each other) "I love you Scottie and Mason!" "Love you too, Mom" "I love you too, Mom!" So, in the end they know I do love them to pieces!
Good night to all! I'm off to bed!

Dave and I have been married for nine years (in Nov.) and are the lucky parents of three beautiful children.
Scottie, our oldest, is 8 and is our 2nd grader. He loves to draw and "play out" the newest superhero movies. At the moment he loves Spiderman, but Transformers is coming in for a close 2nd. He lives for recess, lunch recess, and FRIENDS. He is not a fan of schoolwork, but he is very smart and does well at it.
Mason is our one-of-a-kind middle child. He is 3 years old and he LOVES Barney. We thank Barney for teaching him much of what he knows, including his nursery rhymes, ABCs, and counting. Mason loves to do whatever Scottie is doing. (Scottie is good to let him tag along with the neighborhood kids.) Mason is my happy guy, who always has a new idea or news to relate.
Tanna is our little princess. She was smart enough to be born last after two brothers--a definite strategy to be SPOILED! She is 1 1/2 years old (Nov. 22nd) and has a huge personality in her little body. She's petite, but don't let that fool you--she's tough! You have to be to survive two big brothers! Tanna's main words are Mom, Dad, and No. These words can mean anything, but the Mom and Dad words are selectively used depending on which parent is around. She loves her daddy and is good to her mommy too! The best thing you'll ever get is a Tanna hug -- nothing beats it!
We have lived in Lehi for 7 1/2 years and are enjoying our adventures here. We look forward to sharing them with you!

Life With the Shanks Family
It's been nearly nine years since Dave and I began our adventures. Sadly, a lot of those unrecorded memories have been forgotten or our stacked away in the "Scrapbook Drawer". So, the time has come to get with the times and start recording some of our day-to-day happenings in an up-to-date manner. So today begins the adventure...wish me luck!!
