Guess What?!!!

We're alive!! Life has been SO BUSY! I am actually excited to see September end. It is hard to have 3 birthdays in a month and have all the comings and goings of a new school year. Each night I look to see if we will have a night at home and we usually have something going on. I really should count my blessings that we are a busy, productive family. We have "healthy" and happy kids and so much to be grateful for. Tonight I went to a sealing of a woman to her late husband. He died one year ago Friday. She got her endowments out a year ago and tonight was sealed to him. So, I count my blessing that my husband is here with me and that we are able to enjoy the blessings of our temple marriage during this life too.

So, yes...although I complain, I am so glad to be busy. My friend told me that the secret to keeping your teenagers out of trouble is to keep them so busy doing good things that they don't have time to get into the trouble. I guess that's what I'm trying to do -- stay out of trouble!!

Out of Order!

To Whom It May Concern:

As a courtesy to all of you avid Shanks' Blog readers, this blog is currently out of order. Apparently the blog originator has put blogging on the back burner. Summer vacation does not seem to have helped Shanks Family get any better about blogging. So much for all those great excuses about not having enough time in the day. Hmmph! Clearly blogging is just not a priority. Too bad for any posterity that may have appreciated knowing a little of their family history. Not going to happen here. Aw well, everyone has their cross to bear in this life. Clearly they'll have to make up stories for their children about what it was like in the good old days. Poor kids. For the rest of you just keep on blogging. At least these poor children can piece their childhood together from your mention of them in your comprehensive journal entries. Happy Blogging and don't waste your time here anymore. (Perhaps the guilt trip will get Shanks Family going again -- I hear someone has a big "guilt button" over there!)

Sincerely yours,

Blogger

Busy, busy!!

It's super late -- as usual -- and I'm really just going to leave a quick update. Yes, maybe even shorter than last time's "brief" blog!

We finished a full week back to school and it was long! The weather got nice again after a not-so-nice spring break and now it's back to being cold and rainy again.

Scottie had his first Kyuki-do test for his yellow stripe belt and he did really well. I've never attended a testing session for karate before and had no idea how big of a deal it is. They brought in black belt instructors from all over the area and they rated the kids. Scottie did all his "moves" with the group of students on his level and he did very well. He really is a natural and looked really good to me! (P.S. I know very little about karate!) I guess the person watching him told him he looked really good and just needs to work on kicking higher. We'll see the formal evaluation next week with the presentation of the belts. (Pictures will come too, but we used the Sony camera and I can't find the correct cord -- I think I must be tired!!)

Mason was sad not to be able to test, but he sure has a fan club of older girls in his karate class (its multi-age, multi-level) that just love him. They give him a hug every time they see him and tell me how cute he is. I even overheard one mom say, "Oh that must be Mason that the girls talk about all of the time." He really is cute in his uniform and his winning smile really does win over the girls.

Tanna is just fun to watch grow up. She picks up a play phone and has the most amazing conversations with the mystery person on the other side. She is so funny to watch. She is also a Mini-me of her brothers -- yes, that means all the bad stuff too! Ugghh! She may never be the most lady-like girl around, but she will be able to take care of herself!! She is also NOT shy. She loves to go hop up on the laps of men (i.e. the home teachers, older "grandpas" in the ward, and her male nursery leaders). Ho hum, I know I'm going to have to watch her. She also has learned to ride our little battery powered 4-wheeler which is a funny sight to see. She goes "cruising" down the sidewalk and has even gotten herself all the way to our swing park by herself. She is going to have to be chained down this summer!!!

I am just relaxing after having our next door neighbors over for dinner tonight. Dave loves to entertain and invite people over. I would probably be a hermit if I had my choice! But, it always ends up being a fun experience and we've met a lot of new people in our ward/neighborhood this way! Blessings on Dave's head for being so neighborly! None on my head because I wasn't completely excited about giving us some vegetation time!!

I did get to go to the temple last night though and hopefully that will help me get a blessing or one and a half!! Dave watched the kids so I could get there -- he went Thursday night. It was very nice and a good way to refocus and refuel. I really want to get there more often and hopefully our plan to divide and conquer will help us with this!!

I also got to donate blood Saturday afternoon. I really do enjoy this easy way to help someone else. But, I was very unproductive after getting home and I didn't get nearly what I should have done!! Dave folded the laundry though and that was a huge help!! Now to put it away...tomorrow!!

Dave went and helped clean the grounds at the Developmental Center and I took the kids to a couple of yard sales. It's getting harder to take them, they always want so much that we don't NEED! We'll see how this summer will go with taking them. Dave will be cycling, so I will have the whole gang.

Well, that's enough midnight rambling -- that will explain the lack of coherence in my thoughts! For now... to bed to bed the doctor said. (Well, not really, but he probably would!!!!)

It's Spring Break!

Vacation!!! Yeahoo and a whole week of getting up when I want to and creating my own schedule. Woohoo! Therefore, to appease my guilt I am getting on my blog and checking in with everyone. Here's a brief update:

Life is always busy around our house. I feel like there is always somewhere to go and something to do. School for me has been good. We have a new principal this year and she is great. She's my age and is doing an amazing job. We had a couple of rough years with our last principal. Although, I got along well with her, her PR skills were lacking and there was a lot of tension and tiptoeing around. The staff morale was low and we just moved forward. Cami, on the other hand, is restoring a lot of what was lost. She is very positive, organized, and is getting so much done. She is a go-getter and is a breath of fresh air. She is a good example for all of us and is fun to work with. She and Amy (another teacher) are the two that I'm doing the Associates program with (the two day conferences) and we've had a lot of fun together.

I also have a dream class this year -- 17 students who actually can be trained and do what teachers hope their students will do!! Of course, there are always those couple of students that balance out the rest, but even they are pretty good. I will miss them next year and have a hard time believing our school year is coming to a close. It really feels like I just started with this group! Anyway, it's been a hectic year with Associates and my Reading Endorsement classes, so this truly was a blessing to have such a good group! Poor Amy has my group from last year and they really are a handful. She's counting down the days to summer!!

I just finished a writing class with Brad Wilcox for my Reading Endorsement, and it was a fun, enjoyable class. I had Brad Wilcox at BYU and really enjoyed him there and was happy to get him again. He just returned from being a mission president in Chile and is just such a happy, enjoyable person. He made class a lot of fun and is so easy going! My kind of teacher!! Anyway, on our last night of class, our presentation of the final projects took so long that he just said that we'd forget about the written final. He thought our projects reflected what he had hoped we'd learn in his class. Anyway, like I said, my kind of teacher!!

This term we have Nancy Livingston who is probably in her 80s. She's a hoot and is so sharp. She is very much a stickler on assignments, getting to class on time, and not letting us out one minute early (all opposites from B. Wilcox). So, it reminds me of being in high school again and at least we know we are getting our money's worth!!! It's a good thing she's so funny though! Last week she told us we should all come and visit her in Spanish Fork. We looked at her questioningly and she explained that is where here burial plot is and she'd love visitors! Like I said, she is pretty advanced in age, but still feisty and busy!

At church, I'm the RS pianist. I think the Lord is trying to get me to keep up my piano skills. I have been playing the piano for years and I really am not the most talented. I've gotten better, but I've been humbled many times through it all! I also am a visiting teaching district leader and get to make the fun phone calls asking if visits have been made that month. Once again, the Lord is trying to ensure that I get my visiting teaching done, so I can practice what I preach! I've also been subbing "off the cuff" in primary the last couple of weeks. I have to admit that I am really good at ad lib teaching. Just goes to show I've had years of practice. Just don't tell my supervisors!!

As for the rest of the family...Dave is getting back into cycling again. The weather hasn't been too cooperative, but he's gotten in a couple of good rides already and is excited for the summer season. He has also been doing home improvement projects. We have a new water heater, water softener, kitchen sink (and attached soap dispenser -- as of today). He has also put many hours into our vehicles. He got his truck into top running condition and then purchased a Toyota 4-Runner from our neighbors. He's put A LOT of time into that and has got it running great now too! That was a nice upgrade for him since he was carting around 2-3 kids in his small truck. He never complained though and insisted that I get the van. He wanted me to have a good, comfortable truck for me to drive to and from school. Anyway the 4-runner is much more conducive to car seats and getting kids in and out. It drives really well and is a great car for him. He does love working on cars though, and having 3 cars has given him a lot of opportunities. It looks like we'll be selling the truck soon though and he will miss it.

Dave has also been busy with being a taxiing, stay-at-home dad. He runs Mason to preschool 2x a week. He takes care of the grocery shopping, doctor and dentist appointments and is good to run errands. It helps me a ton and I do appreciate him. I don't know how single, working moms do it! I'd be much crazier than I already am!! :-) He is very much looking forward to getting back to work. He has a huge admiration for stay-at-home moms and wonders how they all don't go crazy!! He has loved his time staying home with Mason and Tanna. We are grateful that he was able to come home when Mason was not able to go to daycare as a baby. He's been able to keep us from putting Tanna in daycare too, so it has been a huge blessing for them. But with Mason going to kindergarten next year and Tanna to preschool, Dave is ready to graduate too and get back to the working world. Keep him in your prayers as he makes this transition!

Scottie is our pre-teen. He's only 9, but he's getting that wonderful teenage attitude already! Auggh!! I'm hoping that he'll grow out of it fast and we'll have some really enjoyable true teen years. He still can be an adorable 9 year old, but there are moments when he forgets.... :-) He loves school, but not for the learning. He is a social bug and is only there for the friends and recesses. I have to be a very hands-on mom with his homework and school work. Thank goodness I'm only two rooms down from his teacher and I can help keep him caught up. Who knows how we'll survive Junior High?!! Homework is not his favorite thing -- understatement of the year-- and he lives to get outside and play with his friends.

He's taking piano lessons this year and, like homework, practicing is also a CHORE! Thank goodness for his piano teacher. She is a computer teacher at our school and she lives out there. He rides the bus to her house on Mondays (Early Out Day), while I am in meetings and then I pick him up. She is so fun and knows how to motivate him. He plays by ear and she supports that while pushing his to look at the notes and learn to read music. She rewards him by letting him play on her keyboard after lessons and do the percussion, etc. He is also writing a song with her and she records them on CDs for him. Anyway, she's a true blessing, because I know he would not stick it out with traditional lessons -- he's not a traditional kid!!

Scottie is also a Bear in Scouts and is able to ride his bike to the leaders' homes for den meetings on Thursdays. Karate takes up Monday and Wednesday nights and keeps me busy. I do use the hour to go to the library or run quick errands with Tanna while we wait. Scottie is showing some natural ability and is excited to test onto his next belt in a couple of weeks. They seem to be impressed with his progress. He doesn't look forward to going to Karate (it interrupts his "friend time"), but he always loves it once he gets there. I have to remind him of that each time. We're trying to teach him that he must stick with his commitments!

(Scottie bandaging up Tanna's hurt back)

Best of all, Scottie is a great big brother. He is so cute with Tanna, and is good to buddy around with Mason. I love that, even with their 4 1/2 year age difference that they still do so much together. I hope that this continues, although I know things will change as they get older.

(Mason's Self Portrait)

Mason is our Mr. Personality. He is so fun to watch as his face lights up when he laughs or is excited. He also tells all when he is sad and every inch of his face looks it! He gets the big lower lip and puppy dog eyes and is very hard to resist! Mason is a great big brother to Tanna. He takes good care of her and plays with her. He can get pretty upset with her, but he makes up for it when things are going well. He is also a great tag-along for Scottie. He keeps up (for the most part) with the "big boys" and has a ball doing it!

Mason loves being 5! He can't wait to go to kindergarten and loves going to preschool. I have high hopes that he will be more motivated in the school department, but who knows?! I helped in his primary class a couple of weeks ago and had to laugh at his high level of participation. He raised his hand and yelled out every answer. Too bad he didn't give the other kids much of a chance! I guess he'll have to work on that in kindergarten!

Mason loves to draw and create. Unfortunately, it usually means big messes because of his big ideas! He's always working on a book, a movie or decorations for a show or party. It's all I can do to sneak them to the recycling bin -- I can't keep even a fraction of his creations. He seems to remember every piece of paper and have a very tuned in tracking device to determine where his works of art have ended up. I try to give everything a couple of days before I sneak it away, hoping he's moved on to the next project by then.

Mason has also become our photographer. He loves to take pictures. His "kid" camera is no longer good enough, but he has to have our family camera. He's gotten pretty good at taking decent pictures. I delete quite a few, but have found some real "keepers" in his collection. It is fun to see the world from his perspective and pictures I never would have thought to take. I do love the delete button, however, especially on my less-than-flattering pictures!

He also is our chef. Unfortunately, without my help his creations are pretty gross. I opened the fridge to a yogurt, carrot something or other the other day. It was very unappetizing and I snuck it to the garbage disposal. He later asked where it was and informed me that he was making a cake! I'm trying to be patient and include him more in the cooking process, but it is much faster without all of the help! I am hoping that his wife will thank me someday and that he takes an active role in the cooking!

Tanna Banana is as cute as ever. Therefore, she is also as busy as ever! She loves to dance and play with her Little Ponies. She also enjoys Little Pony movies. She mostly loves to escape outside and get her big wheel out from under our front stairs. She can do it all by herself and can get up and down the block very quickly. (Faster than her mom on foot anyway!) Luckily Scottie is pretty good to go out with her and keep her corralled. She loves to shadow her brothers too. When she's not skipping town on her bike, she is back on the deck digging the dirt out of my pots or sneaking sand out of the bag (her sand table is still cleaned out from the winter). She's an expert stain maker and is a budding artist (although I'm trying to teach her to contain her drawings to paper --- not her skin, clothing, walls or furniture!!).

Tanna loves to go on drives with her dad and will even opt to tag along on his errands when I get home. I don't complain because I am more productive without her, but am not used to a child that doesn't mind leaving when Mom is home! She also loves to dress up and get her hair done -- well sort of, as long as I'm fast and don't pull her hair into cute pony tails, braids, twists, etc. (Curling it is about as good as it gets!). She is a little mother in a 2 year olds body and loves to keep her brothers in line! Her famous line, which the boys love to hear the most is, "Mom, he said that word!!" You can just imagine that this just inspires them to say all the "potty" words that I strongly dislike!! However, she can say stupid and "shut up" with the best of them just to hear the laughter she gets from her brothers. I really don't feel like I have much of a chance turning her into a proper "lady". She works to please and audience and her brothers get a real kick out of her non-ladylike behaviors!!! Oh dear!!!

Tanna is very close to becoming potty-trained and I'm expecting that will be the first thing we accomplish this summer, when I'm home. She really wants to go to "dancing class" and I told her that she has to be potty trained first, so she is very anxious. I am interested to see how she does in a dance class. She loves to dance, but she's not really into following a group. We'll see -- she could surprise me!

All in all, that's us in a nutshell. We are trying to do what's right and experiment with a lot of wrongs along the way. We are working on the practical application of my future book, 101 Things Every Good Parent Should NOT DO. I'm hoping it will be a best seller and make all this mistake making worth it! :-) But, most of all, we are plugging away and making memories!

Our Story

The following is a story I am putting together for my writing class. We have to publish (for our own personal use) one piece of writing with pictures. etc. I'm not done yet, but here's what I have so far... I still will add pictures and then get it put into book form for the final product. Anyway, here's a bit of Shanks' Family History...

Our Family Story

Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Jill. She was a cute little girl with long brown hair, freckles and round, pinchable cheeks. Jill lived in Naperville near the big city of Chicago, Illinois. Jill had two big brothers named Chris and Mark. Chris loved to tease her and Mark could always make her laugh. Jill also had three little sisters, named Kim, Lynn, and Paige, and she loved to play dolls with them.

In another land, far away, there lived a boy named David. He was four years older than Jill and he lived in a hot place called Tucson, Arizona. Dave had an older brother named Bobby and a big sister named Dina. He also had three younger sisters named Susan, Julie and Maria and a younger brother named Marshall. They were a big family, and they had fun times together. Dave’s dad was a railroad engineer, so he was gone for a couple days at a time. One time Dave got to go on the train with his dad and it was quite an adventure!

While Jill was growing up in Illinois, she spent hours playing airplane on her swing set, Barbies with her sisters, and dolls, dolls, and more dolls! When she got a little older she learned to make porcelain dolls, but they were just to look at – not to play with. She also started to babysit and spent many nights taking care of little children. One of Jill’s favorite things to do was to play school. Sometimes her sisters were her students and sometimes her dolls. She and Kim even started up a summer preschool for real kids in the neighborhood. She realized she loved teaching just like her Mom, Grandma Tanner, and Grandpa Gibson.

Dave spent his growing years teasing his sisters, riding dirt bikes, playing baseball and ice hockey. He loved to be outside playing with his friends. He wasn’t as fond of school, however. He was often late for school because he was so hard to get out of bed in the morning. He also dilly dallied in the alley on the way to school. But that’s not what he told his teacher. He had told his teacher that his mom didn’t get up in the mornings and wouldn’t help him get ready! Boy, was his mom surprised to hear that!

Jill graduated from high school in 1991 and went to Brigham Young University. Dave had finished school in 1987 and he went on to Pima Community College. They both served mission, Jill to Recife, Brazil and Dave to San Diego, California. Finally they would both end up in American Fork, Utah. Jill was teaching school and Dave was working as a roofer and crane operator. It was in this Utah town that they would meet, fall in love, and start their own family story.

On November 24, 1998 Dave and Jill were married in the Chicago, Illinois Temple. They spent their honeymoon in Chicago and Nauvoo and settled back into an apartment in Utah. Jill was teaching first grade and Dave was a crane operator. They enjoyed their time together, but wouldn’t be alone for long!

On September 6, 1999 David Scott Shanks II was born! He was a healthy baby boy who brought tears of joy to his parents eyes the moment they saw him. He had a perfectly round head, blue eyes and his mother’s cheeks! Scottie was a bundle of energy as he learned to crawl and walk. He grew to talk early on and was a delight to his parents and grandparents. Scottie loved to watch “Toy Story” and he loved Buzz Lightyear. He had a huge collection of Buzzes and even a Buzz bedroom. His love of Buzz eventually faded and he delighted in Spiderman, Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Indiana Jones. The newest movie would become his passion and he loved to imagine the stories and “become” the characters.

Scottie also developed a great talent for drawing. He was often complimented for his amazing drawings and of course they were always of his newest, best-loved character at the time. Scottie also loved to ride his bike or anything that would take him outside. He always had lots of neighborhood friends to play with.

On February 27, 2004 another member of the Shanks family was born – Mason Gene Shanks! His birth was a bit scarier for his parents. After he was born he didn’t start breathing like he was supposed to. A respiratory therapist had to work on him to get him going like he should. Mason was whisked right off to the Intensive Care Nursery and his dad was right there alongside him. His mom felt helpless as she lay in her room alone, but was reassured that he was doing well. After a couple of extra days in the hospital, Mason was able to return home connected to an oxygen monitor. An oxygen tank was needed later to help him get just the right level. Luckily, he was able to get off of all tubes and monitors about a month after his birth.

Mason was well received by his big brother, Scottie. He was happy to have a playmate, although it would be a couple of years before they could really pal around together. Mason, was also a handsome baby. He had a round, little head and the Gibson cheeks. He was such a mild mannered baby and was such a blessing to his family! Mason grew to be a Barney fan. He LOVED Barney as much as Scottie had loved Buzz. Mason learned his colors, numbers, and nursery rhymes from Barney, so Barney was his first great teacher! Mason also loved to draw and create art projects and plan out parties and plays. He didn’t get to host all of the parties that he had planned, but he sure wished he could have!

Not long after Mason joined the family another member would join them. On May 22, 2006, Tanna Lee Shanks was born to bring some pink into the Shanks’ home. Tanna was a healthy baby and was very welcomed by her two big brothers. Tanna had blonde hair and the same cheeks as her mom and brothers. She was a very fun addition to the family and, to her mother’s delight, one that would bring dolls back into Jill’s life.

Tanna was a bundle of energy from the time she could get around on her own. She learned quickly how to get into things and make messes. She was the one who would teach her brothers how to really make a mess. Tanna loved to draw like her brothers, but usually it was on the walls. While Mason loved to create, Tanna loved to UN-create! This would keep her parents busy and her brothers frustrated. Tanna was also a dancer. She loved to hear music and dance. High School Musical was one of her favorite movies and she loved to sing-along and dance to the music. Tanna also loved princesses and wearing pretty dresses. But those pretty dresses didn’t keep Tanna inside. She loved to escape, any chance she could, and play in the dirt. Rocks were her favorite snack and she kept her family busy to keep her in the yard. But as busy as she was, they sure were thankful that this energetic, little princess had come to join their family.

The Shanks family was a happy family and they made so many wonderful memories. But their story does not end here. They have many adventures still awaiting them. Their story has just started and they have an eternity of happily ever afters to experience. So from the little brown-haired girl in Naperville to the boy out on his dirt bike in the Arizona desert, their stories have combined to be a happy one and one that has only just begun.

Hold My Hand!

The other day Tanna and I were running into Wal-Mart while Scottie and Mason were at karate. Tanna is quite independent so, I tried to grab her hand in the busy parking lot on the way inside. She was actually quite cooperative (surprisingly enough!). She said, "Mommy, I hold your hand for you not to get lost." Now of course, it wasn't grammatically correct, but I was thrilled with her willingness to grab my hand. As we walked, I thought about the deeper meaning of her statement. As much as I want to steer my children in the right direction and get them on the right path, they also play a big part in keeping me on the "straight and narrow." I cannot truly grow and learn and become who I can be without their guiding influence and the lessons I learn through them. (Boy, do they ever teach me a lot of lessons -- many of which I fail repeatedly!) So, I'm grateful for little hands to hold. I need all the help I can get so I will not get lost!

Let's Dance!

Tanna's newest thing is to say, "Mom, let's dance!" any time she hears music and is in the mood! Well, tonight we were watching a church video called, "Praise to the Man." It is put out by the Living Scripture Company and has many parts of the video seen at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building with some additions/changes. Anyway, it goes through his whole life (in 86 minutes) and at the end W.W. Phelps is penning the words to the song "Praise to the Man" and a touching replay of scenes of Joseph growing up are playing to the stirring music. I, being related to Mom, was emotional feeling the spirit of the moment. Just then Tanna, also being touched by the music, came up to me and said, "Mom, let's dance!"

I was a bit surprised at first, but then was touched at the parallel this had with life. Sometimes, we can get wrapped up in the emotions and be so in tune with our present cares or situation that we lose perspective. In the movie, Joseph Smith has just been killed and W.W. Phelps is talking to Emma about his desire to pen a poem/song for Joseph. She concludes, "He is gone and all we have left are the memories." But, I liked how W.W. Phelps replied. He said, "Not only his memory, we have his teachings. We have his revelations. We have the Kingdom of God on earth!" Wow, what perspective! There is reason to dance. Even in an unfortunate end to his life, he accomplished so much in his short time on earth. And we have reason to celebrate! So, yes, Tanna, let's dance and remember there are so many reasons to do so!
